Boston Takes on Cheese

The Question you have to ask yourself before you look at this recipe is...
Does the cheese Stand alone? Hi Ho The Derry Oh, not it our case!
Our take on a cheese sandwich involved a few other ingredients, but it is SOOO good, you won't want to pass it up!
This recipe is called Open-Faced Turkey Sandwich with Apple and... (wait for it, wait for it)...HAVARTI.
I found this recipe in our Elementary School cookbook.

Our list of players:
4 slices good bread
4 teaspoons mayonnaise
4 teaspoons dijon mustard
1 cup trimmed arugula
4 slices red onion
12 oz. sliced turkey
2 Fuji apples, cored and cut corsswise into 8 slices
1/2 cup grated Havarti Cheese

Logan did the photography for me!
Spread each bread slice with 1 teaspoon mayonnaise and 1 teaspoon mustard.

Layer each slice with 1/4 cup arugula (oops, that's my cute little hand in the picture!)

Layer each slice with 1 red onion slice.

Measure 3 oz. sliced turkey per slice of bread.

Layer each slice with 3 slices turkey

Layer each slice with 4 apple slices

Top each slice with 1 very liberal Tablespoon of Havarti Cheese.

Place sandwiches on a baking sheet and broil 4 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly. Remove from heat.
Serve immediately. 4 Servings. 1 sandwich each.
And amazingly enough, amongst my picky eaters, EVERYONE likes this--even with Arugula and onions, and dijon mustard. They all like it.

  1. Oh, it looks so good!!! I'm impressed that you own a scale. This one I've got to try--even if I have to guess how much turkey to put on.

  2. Yum Yum! I would be SO tempted to go and make this right now if I had harvarti cheese on hand (and arugla...and dijon mustard)...maybe this should not be my grocery list. But I cant wait to try it!

  3. We fixed a version of this sandwich Sunday after church because we needed a fast meal in order to get Elizabeth to the airport and Josh and Erin off--no one wanted onions and we used lettuce rather than arugula, but it was still so delicious! Great addition to our cheese sandwich assortment.

  4. As mom said -we tried a version of this which is good because Mom bought all the ingredients :) I was surprised how great all the flavors worked together. However, I think it did need the onions (no one wanted to go down to the garden and pick them - how lazy are we?).
