Bobby Flay and Pioneer Woman Thanksgiving Throwdown

In the midst of cooking for Dad's birthday party, we took a little break to watch a TiVoed show, Bobby Flay and the Pioneer Woman Thanksgiving Dinner Throwdown.

It was fun to all pile in Mom and Dad's room, and have all of the girls watching together...

...And B.J. who has always been in touch with his feminine side.  Erin's food splattered shirt just shows how hard she was working to make 200 cupcakes that day.

**Spoiler Alert**  The Pioneer Woman won.  I did not expect that.
But Bobby Flay made a roasted brussels sprouts dish that I've been thinking about ever since.  His brussels sprouts were topped with a pomegranate molasses, a vanilla pecan butter and pomegranate seeds.  You can click here for that recipe.

While looking for that recipe, I came across another Bobby Flay recipe for Brussels Sprouts.  This one used 1/2 pound pancetta, and baby yukon gold potatoes and 4 shallots.  So, I made it to accompany a prime rib dinner.  It was really, REALLY good.  Are you remarking on the fact that my brussels sprouts look awfully long and thing?  Well, that is because our store didn't have any brussels sprouts and it was snowing really heavily, so I didn't want to drive to Russos in Watertown to get some.  I used asparagus instead.  It also worked really well.  That recipe is here.
Have you ever noticed that "brussels sprout"s always has an "s" at the end of both words--why "s" at the end of brussels?  Why not just pluralize sprouts and be done with it?  We don't really pronounce the "s" at the end of brussels.  I'll probably never know, but it feels funny to always type an "s" at the end of brussel.

  1. Brussels is probably a French word and there is no accounting for what they put at the end of their words! Such a fun time that was. Have you every found a source for Pomegranate Molasses? I'd like to try those recipes, but our stores don't carry such an exotic ingredient.
