Orange Rolls

I keep putting off posting because I don't have any pictures, so right here insert a picture of heaven, and then you will understand how amazing these orange rolls are.

I haven't made orange rolls in ages, but I was reminded of them when we were served gable house orange rolls at a Dixie College function. (Some of you might remember the gable house, it was a restaurant that had a lot of influence in st. george). My search for the recipe led me to this recipe, supplied by my friend Kristin, who is famous for her cupcakes.

I made them to eat with Sunday dinner but by the time I got home from church (several minutes after everyone else) they were half gone. So we called them an appetizer, but they're probably more like dessert. (Ok, full disclosure, Josh took them out of the oven after I left for church, so I had to come home after sacrament just to try a few. It really helped get me through Sunday school. I'm telling you, being a Utah Mormon has its perks.) I think that day I ate approximately 40, which is weird because the recipe only made 32.

I'm making them again this week for Easter dinner. You can use
any roll recipe you want, but I'll include the one I used. Don't skimp on the glaze. Crazy good.

1/4 c. Warm water
1 cup milk
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c sugar
2 eggs
3/4 tsp salt
4 c flour
1 Tbs yeast

Dissolve yeast in warm water. mix softened butter, sugar, eggs and salt. Slowly mix in yeast mixture and then flour. Knead until smooth and place in bowl to rise double. 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

for the orange rolls:

filling:
1/4 c. melted butter
3/4 c. sugar
2 Tbs. orange zest
*just mix together the sugar and orange zest

glaze:
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. sour cream
1/2 c. butter
2 Tbs. orange juice

split dough in half after it has completed its first rise. Roll each half into circles to cut into pizza shapes for cresent rolls. before you cut them spread on half of the melted butter onto each circle, then sprinkle liberally with the combined sugar and orange zest mixture. cut into pizza slices (16 per circle) and roll up. Let rise about 1 hour. Bake at 375* for approx. 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and drizzle with glaze.

For glaze: Boil all ingredients together for 3 minutes stirring constantly. top rolls with glaze. This makes a lot of glaze, but spread/drizzle on as thick or thin as you want.

  1. These sound like heaven! Must try them for Easter. Should they replace my hot cross buns?
